Art & Design
KS1 & KS2 Art & Design
At Little Mead Primary Academy, our Art and Design curriculum enables children to:
- Access a high-quality art and design education that engages, inspires and challenges individuals.
- Be equipped with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and design and create their own works of art.
- Develop the skills to think critically, make adaptations where necessary and comment thoughtfully on their own work.
- Gain an understanding of the role art and design have played in shaping our history and contribute to our wider culture.
- Know that art and design is a means of expression and to be confident in expressing themselves through their own work.
Our Art and Design curriculum has been designed around six key art and design strands:
- Drawing
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Collage
- Printing
- Textiles
Central to pupils gaining skills in each strand is the ability to explore and develop ideas - including artistic questioning and observation of the world around us, the use of discussion and analysis to foster creativity and the study of the role of artists and designers.
To secure depth of understanding and mastery of practical skills, pupils revisit each artistic skill on a bi-yearly rotation. Our blocking of these skills allows significant links between artistic approaches and periods to be formed, allowing pupils to understand how ideas and reactions changed and altered the direction and stylistic view of the arts through time.
